In the abrasion testing device, a flat, round sample is pressed against a spherical counter sample with a precisely known force. The counter sample is permanently mounted on a rigid drive shaft. The coefficient of friction is determined during the test by measuring the elastic deformation of the arm using appropriate strain gauges.

Device for testing abrasion resistance

The linear wear coefficient of the sample and counter-sample is measured using a precise position sensor (wear). This simple method allows for the examination of friction and wear of nearly any known combination of solid materials in a lubricated or non-lubricated system. Monitoring test parameters such as speed, frequency, pressure, time, temperature, and humidity enables the simulation of typical conditions experienced in reality for a given friction pair. An important feature of Elbit's tribotester is the ability to terminate the test upon reaching a specified time, distance, or wear depth. The tribotester can perform reciprocating motion measuring the friction coefficient in both directions of displacement. This allows for the study of changes in static and kinetic friction coefficients over time.

As an additional option, tribotesters can be equipped with a housing that allows for the control of an atmosphere with variable humidity and temperature. A special case is the ability to conduct tests in a vacuum.

Another option is an attachment for the automatic testing of the electrical conductivity of the friction pair, which enables the examination of the insulating properties of coatings.

The controlling software allows for: - real-time calculation of the following values: force, load, distance, rotational speed, friction coefficient, temperature of the friction pair, wear depth, friction coefficient, wear rate values of both friction elements, and optionally temperature and humidity in the chamber, electrical conductivity between the friction pair.

  • regulation (from the connected computer) of test parameters such as rotational speed, frequency, number of revolutions, friction coefficient threshold, temperature, time;
  • easy archiving of measurement data and export to ASCII or Excel files.
