The system was built using Elbit MO1 radio modems. Each of them is installed at a distance greater than its range (2 km in open terrain). Each modem is configured to independently read (at a set time interval) the sensor connected to it (any device with MODBUS transmission) and store the read data. Nine CZU2HT temperature and humidity sensors from our company were used for the project. The network operates on channel 7 (433.710023 MHz) with a data transmission frequency of 4.8 kBaud.

Mobile reading system for 433MHz radio modems

The maximum memory of the radio modem is 30kB, which, for example, with a 12-bit value for temperature or humidity, provides a capacity of about 15000 values. With a set time interval of 1 minute, this results in a capacity of 10.5 days of continuous recording. This is also the period after which the recorded data should be read and the modems reset. This is, of course, done via radio.

The mobile system developed by our company for reading data from the radio modem network consists of a laptop computer along with software for data acquisition, a GPS receiver, and a base radio modem – directly connected to the computer.

Reading data from the radio modem network involves turning on the software on the laptop and approaching each of the measurement points at the appropriate distance (in practice, in built-up areas, this is about 300m). The reading program (illustration below) automatically calculates the position of the car relative to the base station every second and calculates the distances to defined measurement points. If any distance is less than that set in the program parameters, an attempt is made to connect to the radio modem of the measurement point and read the stored data. The entire process is continuously displayed on the screen. The position of the car and the measurement points, as well as the status of their readings, are marked on the map.

All measurement data (not just those read) can be viewed in the form of graphs in the "Data" tab. The program also generates alarms for exceeding set values.

The software is completely user-friendly. Users can easily increase and define the number of reading points and configure the radio modem network.
