The modernisation of the strength testing machine described in this study was commissioned by a commercial company in 2021. The work on the machine was based on previous modernisations of similar strength testing machines, and similar solutions were applied.

A dedicated industrial controller was installed in the modernised machine to manage the basic functions of the device (motion control, measurement data processing, etc.). The device is equipped with a laptop computer, which is used to record and visualise measurement data, perform calculations and set control data.

Modernization of Instron v2 strength machine

In the described modernization variant, the existing electromechanical blocks have been replaced by modern electronic systems specifically designed for this study.

In particular:

- the recorder block along with the measurement amplifier of the head has been replaced by measurement cards of the controller (20÷40kHz, 16 bits, 2 channels), designed with bridge amplifier systems and position measurement systems manufactured by Elbit, while the recording takes place in the internal computer.

- the control unit for the beam, the amplidyne, servo amplifier, selsyn with the drive system, and the power supply have been replaced by a direct current (momentary) motor with servo drive systems in a multi-loop control system (position, speed, current measurement) of appropriate power.

- the mechanical parts (gearbox, drive screw assemblies, and cross beam) remain unchanged.

- As part of the modernization, a compressive-tensile head with a range of 100kN has been created;

- The modernization also anticipates future equipping of the machine with a chamber furnace to maintain a constant temperature;

- The modernization also includes the commissioning and integration with the original measuring heads from Instron;

- As part of the modernization, calibration of two heads with ranges of ±100kN was performed.
