Device data sheet in PDF format
Photoelectric gates are used to measure the speed of any flying projectiles. However, their main purpose is to measure the initial velocity, i.e. the velocity achieved by the projectile when it leaves the barrel.
The software (a module attached to the ‘TARCZA’ programme) automatically converts the measured projectile velocity into initial velocity based on the known distance between the gate and the barrel. The following laws were used for the calculations:
Siacci's law of resistance;
the 1934 law of resistance.
The frame contains many horizontal photoelectric barriers. A projectile passing through the shield interrupts one or several lines, which is detected by the receiving photoelements in the frame. A precise time measurement (with an accuracy better than 1ms) between the projectile passing through the first gate and the second gate, with a constant base (distance) between the gates, allows for the calculation of the average speed over that section.
The record with the above data is transmitted via a digital link (RS232, RS422, or USB) to a PC with the appropriate recording software running.
The gate can also operate autonomously. In this case, a panel for displaying results needs to be connected.
